Existing airport buildings are becoming the setting for a new business chapter in Mineral Wells. XMX Defense marked its arrival with an October 3 groundbreaking and says construction and buildout are underway in leased facilities for unmanned-aircraft work. The planned uses range from assembly and engineering to maintenance, training and flight operations. ([1]; [2])
The company also plans the Texas Unmanned Systems Defense Center of Excellence, intended to bring other businesses into a shared industry setting. Discussions with additional participants are still underway. The announcement describes an operation taking shape, rather than a fully completed campus with a published opening schedule. ([1])
There is a local property story behind that distinction. The city owns and operates Mineral Wells Regional Airport, whose land extends into both Palo Pinto and Parker counties. It already serves general aviation, business and training activity. XMX is entering an existing aviation setting, not creating an airport from scratch. ([3])
Existing assets, a longer local story
A separate city leasing page advertises more than 100 acres of airport property alongside existing hangars, manufacturing facilities and offices. That is an airport-wide offering, not the acreage of the XMX project. Availability and terms would need to be confirmed directly before treating any parcel as a current opportunity. ([4])
The community connection runs deeper than available space. The National Vietnam War Museum’s Fort Wolters exhibit records that more than 40,000 helicopter pilots trained there. It gives residents and newcomers a way to understand the aviation history that predates this latest company announcement. ([5])
The Collective sees a useful question for the next chapter: how will these existing spaces be brought into service, and which additional businesses will actually join? Following those milestones will tell agents more than treating a groundbreaking as proof of future jobs, nearby housing demand or completed development.
